- To share information with anyone with an interest in the people of southern Lakeland and particularly those Riggs, Allingtons, Cassons, Atkinsons and the other families from which I am descended
- To give me a vehicle to translate and give focus to my meanderings through the great ocean of available family history which is now available.
It may well be then that this is the end of the line of my Rigg ancestors, but I will keep looking - you never know what's out there! In doing this research, I've achieved much more than I thought I would, starting by taking the barebones of the information of my father's parents and grandaparents which was available within my family I have traced my Rigg ancestors back to the 1730s - and on my paternal grandmother's side have identified my seven times grandfather Benjamin Allington who was born in Winchcombe, Gloucestershire in 1660 - that was the time of the Restoration of the Monarchy following the Civil War. Perhaps more remarkably, also on the Allington side, I know of a possible eleven times grandfather - John Stevens born in 1575 at Caversham, Gloucestershire that was during the reign of Elizabeth I !
I will be checking him out further in due course...
For me though the most rewarding part of researching my family history has changed from chasing dates and looking to get back as far as possible, to growing the picture of my ancestor's lives, how they earned a living, their family circumstances and the area in which they lived. I've been very surprised at the amount of such information which is out there.
I hope you find the website's information of interest and use. Please do let me know if you have any comments or questions - or corrections!
